After graduating college, Mike spent 7 years in the environmental construction field as a project manager. He gained critical management experience on many intricate projects including Boston’s Central Artery/ Tunnel Project, the closure of several municipal landfills, the demolition of the South Bay Incinerator in Boston’s South End and the design and remediation of many hazardous waste disposal sites throughout the state.
The most valuable lesson he learned was the importance of communication, communication between clients, regulating agencies, subcontractors and co-workers. Without a coherent flow of information, errors build exponentially and ultimately lead to construction projects that are over budget and off schedule… nobody’s friend in the construction world.
In the late 1900’s, Mike hired a large, successful general contractor to build him a house. The process was as disorderly and poorly managed as one could imagine, This provided the impetus for Mike to launch into residential construction, realizing that with a few of the management tools learned in heavy construction. There was a way to make the building process not only successful, but enjoyable for all parties involved. In 2000, after meeting Chris Coughlin, the pre-cursor to Coughlin & Shea was born and has been evolving and expanding every since.
